Such holy men are allowed to wander freely through the land, even into the great halls of chieftains, whom they frequently berate for violating this ancient taboo or that. But, although Caladog has more to rebuke about him than any High King in memory, they do not trouble him. He goes down to the water and speaks at length with them, convincing them of his great mission to reclaim Calradia. for the Battanians, as though he were the second coming of Mon himself.” — “Istiana's agent in Seonon, Taseil, is one of the few Battanians not under Caladog's spell. She was a niece of old High King Aeril, who gave Caladog his daughter in marriage when the latter was just a young warrior, an orphan of no account, and for his generosity 'was murdered' - according to Taseil, anyway. Her parents had opposed Caladog's rise and were executed, and those family members who survived were driven into exile. But the usurper, who bestows punishment and mercy according to his whim, chose to spare her. By all accounts, Caladog is a clever and calculating man. He chooses deliberately to act arbitrarily and impulsively, as though he were born to kingship and never doubts his own authority, as far as possible from the man he truly is, someone who needed to plot his every move to the top.” — “She would rebel openly against Caladog, she said, except that if she lost her own life, who would take care of her skulls and who would remember the deeds behind each one?” > > *Pulled from* [[3-heroes-(Bannerlord)]] — “The current High King of Battania is Caladog, a brilliant war captain adopted by the prior king, Aeril, who then died in mysterious circumstances. Despite the doubts around his accession, Caladog has made himself popular among the lesser clans of the land who admire him, a man of no great lineage, for having discomfited the Battanians' traditional clan hierarchy. His clan is the fen Gruffendoc, a formerly obscure family now swollen with his comrades-in-arms with whom he has made marriage alliances.” — “Ergeon is head of the fen Derngil and brother of the vanished king Aeril. Although his clan deeply resents Caladog, whom they consider a lowborn upstart who probably had something to do with King Uthelhain's disappearance, Ergeon insists that his relatives remain loyal to the new king. The fen Derngils have always stood for a strong monarchy, and he is loathe to return the Battanians to the anarchy that consumed them for much of their history.” > > *Pulled from* [[3-settlements-(Bannerlord)]] — “Seonon, sad Seonon, has a history as dark as the waters of the Llyn Tywal. Here Algana the Fair stood atop the tower lamenting the death of her beloved Gorawan, until the spirits of the Otherworld were themselves overcome with sadness and allowed his shade to ascend through the pool for a day and a night to console her. In latter days this land has often been ravaged by Sturgian raiders, and not far from here lies the wood where King Aeril disappeared, clearing the way for the rise of Caladog.” > > *Pulled from* [[3-std_story_mode-(Bannerlord)]] — “We waited for them, like wolves in the wood, as their vanguard came up the winding road. They came without archers to protect them. Caladog blew his horn, and our bowmen fired on them from all sides. They turned their shields one way, and were hit from the other. A glorious thing to watch...” — “Or perhaps it was just Raganvad. He was stewing in his anger when up comes the Battanian king, Caladog. The Battanians had taken their time stripping the bodies of the imperial vanguard and the Sturgians were angry at them, so Raganvad called him a coward. Caladog sneers at him and walks off.” — “Well... King Caladog's great victory... Who would dare say anything to tarnish its shine?” — “King Aeril disappeared while hunting, and Caladog becomes king. He leads the tribes to war. Oh, we were eager enough, even though Aeril had made a truce with the Emperor, sealed by oaths. When we were dazzled with the prospect of vengeance, who cares about our sacred word and honor?” — “Look, right before the battle, our high king, Aeril, disappears. And his adopted son Caladog becomes king. That sets tongues to wagging, you know? But let me tell you - old Aeril could never in his life have won such a victory as did Caladog, that day.” > > *Pulled from* [[3-std-wanderer-strings-xml-(Bannerlord)]] — “But there's no legions any more. And since Caladog became king, well, he's gotten the young to think that to fight for the Empire is treason. Treason to what? 'Battania'? There is no Battania. Never has been. Just a bunch of quarreling warlords, who'll steal your cows as soon as you turn your back on them.” > > *Pulled from* [[3-world_lore_strings-(Bannerlord)]] — “We are the sons of Derngil. Our forefathers came to this land in the ships from the west, in the time of the gods. We have been here a long time. And I tell you, never have we seen a leader like Caladog. A right murderous bloody bastard, a man with no father, some would say, and would I call them a liar? But he holds us together, somehow, and I would stomach a great deal of tyranny for that.” — “We, the sons of Uvain, were passed over by the High King when it came time to marry their daughter. They chose Caladog. And, well, one might ask... What did that get them? But no matter, no matter. It's all done now. We have all sworn our oaths to Caladog. So let him rule.” > > *Pulled from* [[Blog_28_Battania]] — “Lots of our characters, too, are based on history - or legends, at least. For example, the Battanian king Caladog is partially inspired by Gruffydd ap Llywellyn, who dominated much of Wales in the 11th century. He was a very colourful figure, ruthless yet possessed of a wicked sense of humour. He is famous for quipping, when accused of having killed off all his competitors for the kingship, ‘I merely blunt the horns of Wales' sons lest they injure their mother.’ The charismatic silver-tongued rogue, who'd steal your cattle and then extemporise a poem about it: this was a bit of stereotype of Celts among the English at the time.” > [!location]- Info from: > [[3-lords-(Bannerlord)]] ``` <!-- BATTANIANS --> <!-- Caladog fen Gruffendoc, ruthless --> <NPCCharacter id="lord_5_1" name="{=w51wGx4b}Caladog" age="39" voice="ironic" default_group="Cavalry" is_hero="true" culture="Culture.battania" occupation="Lord" face_mesh_cache="true"> <face> <!--face_key value="00054548800027875ca466a563442bd406899779a794573b86a7c473581ab487000e66550e46c99d000000000000000000000000000000000000000001f83180" /--> <BodyProperties version="4" key="00054408800027875CA466A563442BD406899779A794573B86A7C473581AB487000546550E46C99D000000000000000000000000000000000000000000F03180" /> </face> <skills></skills> <Traits> <Trait id="BalancedFightingSkills" value="10" /> <Trait id="Commander" value="16" /> <Trait id="Politician" value="16" /> <Trait id="Manager" value="8" /> <Trait id="Mercy" value="-1" /> <Trait id="Honor" value="-1" /> <Trait id="Valor" value="1" /> <Trait id="Generosity" value="1" /> <Trait id="Egalitarian" value="1" /> </Traits> <Equipments> <EquipmentRoster /> <EquipmentSet id="bat_king_template_bat_m" /> <EquipmentSet id="bat_king_template_civ_m" civilian="true" /> </Equipments> </NPCCharacter> ``` > &emsp;&emsp;<br> ![[encyclopedia_calradica.gif|center|300]]<br> >*“A massive `Mount & Blade` wikipedia.”*<br>About [Encyclopædia Calradica](About-the-Encyclopædia.md)<br>About the [Project](Project-(Pillar).md)<br>About the [Author](Horseapple.md) <br>&emsp;&emsp;
