More enthusiastic than father. Switch with Apys?” > - (*Note*: Sulla, I think, was an appointed consul during the time of the Roman Republic. I'm going off of my memory of Tom Holland’s book Rubicon; [^3] a consul was like a general who was only allowed one year to serve the Republic in-field, traditionally it was never more and this was on purpose as to avoid generals from gaining too much military strength and/or acclaim with the people of the republic. Roman Senators essentially had constant dick-measuring contests with each other, seeking Consul-ship was like the pinnacle of a Roman’s achievement, so they constantly cheated one another and would even let providences under their care suffer from invasions and pillaging if it meant someone they hated in the Senate would be denied Consul-ship. Nevertheless, Sulla secured a Consul-ship and he did exactly what the Republic feared, as I think, he gained massive military strength from fighting to defend the territory of the Republic from barbarian incursions and from expanding the republic’s frontiers. Upon returning to Rome he brought his legions into Rome with him, which was highly illegal and Sulla knew that. To make his crimes worse, he took control over the Senate of the Roman Republic. I think he did this by either bribery, which was naturally extremely common in a highly corrupt and easily swayed oligarchy, as well by strong-arming the senators into submission via his legionaries, who would stand directly behind Sulla’s senatorial opponents during sessions. This either scared them into signing off on proposals they otherwise would have vetoed, or, if they were brave, he, I believe, would have the legionaries followed and beaten in the streets. Sulla claimed his control was not about tyranny, but for the sake of cleaning the republic of all its corruption. Through these acts, Sulla briefly turned the Roman Republic to an unofficial kingdom and/or empire, and if there’s anything the Republic hated, it was kings. Sulla had completely shattered Roman Republican traditions by forgoing the strict and long-running one-year timeframe imposed upon all consuls since the overthrow of the last Roman King. Instead, Sulla decided he would reign as consul for a lot more years, and eventually, he has himself declared consul for life; a king in all but name, as he held control of all the republic’s resources, man-power, and military strength. But, surprisingly, he later chose to relinquish power to the Senate as he voluntarily retired to estates and villa. In the end, Sulla it seems, really did, at least in part, believe in the ideals of the Republic and did not wish to strangle it any longer. What’s even more shocking is that, I believe, Sulla died of natural causes — of old age — not of assassination or *coup*, any other from of murder or revenge. Sulla came before the time of Julius Caesar, but if I recall correctly, it was he who set the example for what was possible if a Roman were to reach for the skies; as is what I think inspired Julius Caesar, as well as the richest Roman ever; Crassus, and the famous general Pompeii ‘the Great’.)
