# Lycaron
## Prize Town for Silver Mine - One of the Last Foot Holds of the Old [[Palaic]] Tribes - Historically Seen Many Sieges
---
# Backstory & History
The natural fortress of [[Lycaron]] sits on a spur jutting out of the great Ornian rock. In the final years of the [[Imperial]] conquest, the [[Palaic]] tribe here negotiated a peaceful federation with the [[Calradian-Empire]], only to see their home seized by the rebel leader [[Gethuz]]. The ensuing siege was only the first of many that [[Lycaron]] would undergo in the ensuing centuries, as its nearby silver mines made it a prize for every [[Imperial]] pretender who ever tried to seize power in a civil war. It is said that the colony of vultures who inhabit the upper reaches of the Rock have dined on the flesh of every people of [[Calradia-Conti.]].
This settlement is part of the [[Southern-Empire]]. Owned by [[Imperial]] house, [[Pethros]].
[[Asaios]] on [[Tacteos]] (See page [[13]])
> [[Istiana]]'s agent there, the doctor [[Tacteos]], was a very considerate host but clearly short of money. He talked a bit about his woes. Even the most skilled physician fails to cure many of his patients, he said, and one of the town patriarchs (**in Lycaron**) had died under his knife a year or so back. The patient's bereaved relatives, helped by [[Tacteos]]'s jealous competitors, set about attacking the doctor's reputation, and he did not have the energy to defend himself. Instead of treating those who can afford to pay a doctor's usual fees, [[Tacteos]] said, he wanders from village to village. The poor cannot pay much but, being used to have their ailments ignored by the learned, are grateful for what they get.
[[the-Surgeon]] ([[Tacteos]])
> I'm a surgeon. I trained at the [[Imperial]] academy in {IMPERIALCAPITAL} ([[Lycaron]]). I had many rich and influential patients in the town. I thought I was well shielded from the intrigues and dangers of the [[Calradian-Empire]].
[[Bloodaxe]]
> I'll tell you - what most people believe is a pack of lies. I was in the [[Vaegir]] guard in the time of [[Arenicos]]. We took our discipline seriously; we were proud of it. Then the riots happened. What I saw in {IMPERIALCAPITAL} ([[Lycaron]]).. Even now it makes me feel ashamed.
[[the-Exile]]'s father died here and home was ransacked during riots after [[Arenicos]]' death.
> My father was a grain merchant in {IMPERIALCAPITAL} ([[Lycaron]]). Men such as he feed the city, yet they are hated when the price is high, and they do not sell at a loss. When the riots broke out, the riff-raff were not content to loot our warehouses. They attacked our house, and broke my father's skull with a weighing block.
[[the-Wainwright]]
> My father was a wheelwright. Everyone knew that the best work was in {IMPERIALCAPITAL} ([[Lycaron]]), in the streets around the hippodrome fixing chariots. So we sold our shop and went there, he and I - my mother was dead. The rumors weren't wrong, the work was good, but then you know what happened. The riots, the hippodrome burned, and my father killed for being a foreigner.
[[the-Black-(Imperial)]]
> A group of men in our alley, they called themselves '[[the-Centaurs]]', I guess they took a liking to me. Gave me special errands to run from them - started with picking pockets, ended with sticking knives into their enemies. Back then I'd do anything for a handful of figs and cheese and a pat on the head.
> [...]
I was an orphan, you see. Worked for a gang, as our kind must so often do. Did their foul work for them. **But they perished in a siege**, and I decided to strike out on my own, see what this fine land of [[Calradia-Conti.]] could offer me.
