![[sturgia 1.png]] # Sibir ## Name Derived From Local Hero --- # Backstory & History [[Sibir]] was founded in a dark valley amid the Chertyg mountains by [[Nord]] traders ([[Nord]]), who wished a base to buy furs from the local [[Vakken]]-speaking foresters. As the [[Sturgian]] tribes ([[Principality-of-Sturgia]]) became principalities, and elected chieftains evolved into boyars who demanded taxes and labor as their due, this region became a magnet for Sturgians who had little taste for deference. Today, the ambitious [[Isyaroving]] family governs this region, but they must always balance their hunger for wealth and men to fight their wars with their subjects' reluctance to provide it. This settlement is part of [[Principality-of-Sturgia]]. [[Arto]], who is half-[[Vakken]], lives here in Sibir. He's an informant for [[Istiana]]. > From time to time I caught a glimpse of fires burning in the woods off the trail. Villagers told me these were 'the [[Forest-People]]', who call themselves the [[Vakken]], burning down a swathe of woods and sowing their crops. They say that the cleared land gives great yields at first, and a [[Vakken]] must work less than a [[Sturgian]] to feed himself and his family. But it is quickly exhausted, and so the [[Vakken]] must move about from place to place. [[Istiana]]'s man [[Arto]] in [[Sibir]], himself half-[[Vakken]], told me a bit about his people. **No one could say whether they came to this land first, or the Sturgians.** For as long as anyone could remember, he says, the two people have intermingled.
