# Bragança, (city, district)
> A city and _concelho_ (municipality) of the Kingdom of Portucale.
![[rodrigo_de_braganca.webp|right|150]]Bragança is mentioned in *Mount & Blade: Warband’s* Custom Battle mode, where a character called *Rodrigo de Braganca* is available to choose. [^4] “There is a reason no one goes about the cities without armed guards once the sun sets, and that reason is Rodrigo de Braganca.” [^5]
## `1084`
> During *Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord*
![[county_of_portucale.webp|left|150]]Just before `1084` – the start date of *Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord* – the ruler of Castile and León Alfonso the VI took over the *County of Portucale* (“Portus” + “Cale” = “Warm Port” in Latin) in `1064` when Ferdinand the I of Castile re-conquered Coimbra (another place in Portugal past Bragança). However, Coimbra (and potentially Bragança too) was entrusted to a Mozarabic governor. *Mozarabic* means that a Christian populace of Spain is under the rule Muslim Moorish kings. Moors roughly equals the *Caliphate of Cordoba*. [^2]

> *Note*: inhabitants either were Muslims that were ruled by Christians, or spoke Arabic and not Castellano/Castilian (aka Spanish).
Then, in `1095` the African Almoravids annexed Muslim Spain, so Alfonso VI, the ruler of Castile and León, provided the defense of it by calling upon Henry of Burgundy. Alfonso married Henry to his illegitimate daughter, Teresa. This made Henry the Count of Portugal. So Henry of Burgundy and Count of Portucale, with his wife “Queen” Teresa, ruled.
## `1257`
> During *Mount & Blade: Warband*
![[kingdom_of_portucale_symbol.webp|right|150]]Afonso Henriques became count of Portugal after the deaths of Henry and Teresa. After his victory of the Muslims on `1139` he began to use the title of King, that’s what the legends say at least. Historically though, in `1143` Alfonso VII accepted his cousin’s autonomy, although it wasn’t until `1179` that the title of King was formally conceded. [^3] By `1257`, the start of *Mount & Blade: Warband*, the Kingdom of Portucale, or Portugal, would have been firmly established. In other words, the kingdom was founded in `1143` unofficially but `1179` officially.
