![[about_calradica_banner_2.webp]] # Charnye > Possibly the cities Charnyevichy or Charnyeyevichy in Belarus ![[borislav.webp|right|150]]A character from *Mount & Blade: Warband’s* custom battle mode named [[Borislav]], is said to hail from a place called: Charnye. [^3] # `1084` > During *Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord* The early eastern Slavic tribes had formed local principalities: Pinsk, Turaw, Polatsk, Slutsk, and Minsk. These principalities later came under the control of the Kievan Rus’ (in Bannerlord, the Principality of Sturgia) in the mid-9th century; *c.* `850`. [^1] Therefore during the time of *Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord* in `1084`, Charnye, if it’s within Belarus, is under the dominion of the Principality of Sturgia.

![[belarus_turov_polatsk_symbol.webp|left|150]]Charnye could be in either the *Principality of Polatsk* or the *Principality of Turov* (Turov encompassed Pinsk at the time) [^8] of modern-day Belarus, then possibly known as Byelorussia, or “White Russia” and/or [Gudija](Gudija-Cntry.md). [^12] [^4] (Ex. today, Charnyevichy city is in the district of Polatsk, and Charnyeyevichy city is in the district of Pinsk.) Even theoretically, within the *Mount & Blade* universe, based-off lore, Charnye could also simultaneously exist in two regions.

Sibir becomes Charnye in *Mount & Blade: Warband*. Since the eastern Slavic tribes, which is what Belarus was made up of at the time, are said to practice “primitive shifting agriculture on burned-over forestland, as well as honey collecting and fur hunting” [^1] it’s possible we can tie them to the [[Vakken]], also known as the [[Forest-People]]. And because Sibir is found in the Vakken’s lore, and the Chertyg Mts. itself, as well as Sibir presumably being off of Warband’s map in `1257`, it’s possible Sibir is later renamed to Charnye in respect to the Chertyg Mts. > *Click* [here](Bannerlord-to-Warband-Topography-of-Calradia.md) for example on fitting Warband into Bannerlord’s map. Lastly, Sturgia is based off of Russia, Ukraine, and *Belarus*. [^9]

Charnye exists above the Karakaz River, North-West of [[Baltakhand]] in the Khuzait-Khanate. Charnye is said to be: “in the far reaches of the Vaegir tundra”, [^3] key word *tundra*. A tundra is a cold, typically flat, treeless biome. [^6] Sibir, and the Chertyg Mts. as a whole, fulfills two of those elements but not the treeless part. For a cold, mostly flat, treeless biome, we have to look all the way to above the town of [[Baltakhand]] in the Khuzait-Khanate, following the Karakaz River into the North-West. > It is hard show what I mean, you can look in-game yourself, or *click* [here](Calradia-Toponyms.md) or [here](Map-of-the-World.md) for a rough idea. Neither theory works perfectly however. Since Belarus is part of the Kievan Rus’ (aka Sturgia) *c.* `11th century`, and I believe Charnye is in modern-day Belarus, Charnye would have to exist in Bannerlord – but clearly it isn’t. Furthermore, while the Finnic tribes (Vakken, Forest-People) and the eastern Slavic tribes (aka the local principalities: Pinsk, Turaw, Polatsk, Slutsk, and Minsk, wherein Charnye may be located) are not actually the same peoples and are pretty different. Clicking [here](https://www.britannica.com/topic/Finnic-peoples#/media/1/619069/61394), notice how geographically, Belarus and how the Finnish tribes (highlighted orange) are far away. [^7]

Still, these are the best theories I got. Personally, I prefer the idea that Sibir becomes Charnye in Warband, but let me know your theories.

# `1257` > During *Mount & Blade: Warband* ![[golden-horde-symbol.webp|right|150]]The overthrow of Kyiv by the Mongol invasion of `1240` brought about the dissolution of Kievan Rus. Many Belarusian towns were laid waste and became dependencies of the Golden Horde, the western portion of the Mongol Empire. Over the next 150 years the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. [^1] During `1257`, which is the canonical start of *Mount & Blade: Warband*, Charnye may be under Mongol rule via its western wing: the Golden Horde also known as the Kipchap Khanate.
